Israeli clean fuel cells aim to slash diesel pollution

Following five years of R&D to maximize efficiency and affordability, in 2016 GenCell introduced the G5 line of hydrogen gas-powered backup generators. Reshef estimates G5’s running cost is a third to half lower than a diesel generator.

Cheaper catalyst can generate hydrogen in a commercial device

Researchers have shown for the first time that a cheap catalyst can split water and generate hydrogen gas for hours on end in the harsh environment of a commercial electrolyzer -- a step toward clean, large-scale hydrogen production for fuel, fertilizer and industry.

BDR Thermea Group receives first hydrogen certification in the Netherlands for its domestic boilers

Kiwa, the independent testing, inspection and certifying body, has approved BDR Thermea Group’s range of Remeha domestic gas boilers in the Netherlands for up to 20 percent hydrogen admixture. Adding hydrogen from renewable sources into the natural gas supply is expected to reduce carbon emissions by around 8 percent, and so contribute to the energy transition.

A $39 Billion Wind Company Bets Hydrogen Is Key to Climate Goals

By 2025, Orsted will move beyond studies and have electrolyzer projects up and running, including a 30-megawatt project it’s part of in Germany, Nordstrom said. Beyond then, scale and potential is hard to forecast.

TOYOTA REALLY BELIEVES HYDROGEN FUEL CELLS ARE THE FUTURE: HERE’S WHY

The fuel cell is the future, Toyota believes, and the Mirai is its flagship. We at Autoweek are in the middle of a year-long loan of a long-term first-gen Mirai test car, so in that sense we are driving the future, or at least what Toyota believes the future will be. With a newly styled and possibly even fun-to-drive Mirai coming next year, talk of fuel-celled buses and semis on the horizon, and with no signs of Toyota letting up on the fuel cell throttle, we sat down for a few drinks with chief engineer Yoshikazu Tanaka to get details about Toyota’s fuel-cell philosophy.

Ballard Announces Order From Van Hool For 20 Fuel Cell Modules to Power Buses in Holland

Ballard fuel cell modules have demonstrated unmatched on-road performance in fuel cell buses, including earlier generation modules operating in some European buses for more than 35,000 hours with only minimal fuel cell maintenance required.

Europe's JIVE (Joint Initiative For Hydrogen Vehicles Across Europe) funding programs are intended to pave the way to commercialization of fuel cell electric buses by coordinating procurement activities to unlock economies-of-scale and reduce costs as well as supporting new hydrogen refueling stations. Results of the JIVE programs are expected to demonstrate the technical readiness of FCEBs to bus operators and the economic viability of hydrogen as a zero-emission bus fuel to policy makers. The JIVE programs are supported by a total of €57 million in grants from the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU).

Sustainable and independent energy supply: Lab1886 supports Rolls-Royce Power Systems in a pilot project for stationary fuel-cell systems

On the basis of automotive fuel cells, in the coming months Rolls-Royce will develop a holistic concept for future sustainable and independent emergency power supply under its MTU product and solutions brand. It is intended primarily for safety-critical areas of application, for example data centres - an area which today is covered by conventional engines. The project is already in the development phase. Construction of plants for the pilot project is planned to begin at the start of next year.

Why Power-to-Gas May Flourish in a Renewables-Heavy World

While still in its infancy, power-to-gas provides a promising approach to convert renewable power into “green” hydrogen and methane, furnishing the renewables sector with a potentially lucrative array of end-uses. A newly announced set of dramatically larger and ambitious projects indicate it has made serious inroads within the energy transition.

The EU can use hydrogen to stop climate change and create jobs

The other reason hydrogen energy is so interesting is that costs have come down dramatically — the cost of producing it from renewable power was 40 times as expensive as the equivalent amount of oil in 2000 and 15 times in 2010. Today we are looking at hydrogen energy being twice the cost of oil, and there is a clear path towards getting a figure as low as half.
