SoCalGas Breaks Ground on First-of-its-Kind Technology to Produce Clean Hydrogen for SunLine Transit Agency's Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Buses
The demonstration will test STARS' technology, which was developed at the Pacific Northwest National Lab. The technology uses a combustion free process, so that it produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to a conventional steam methane reforming process. Since the compact system is based on low-cost 12x1-inch, 3D-printed reactor disks and heat exchangers, it can be easily installed at fueling stations to help meet the demand while advancing climate and clean air goals. After its installation, the first STARS system will produce up to 80 kilograms of clean hydrogen a day, that's enough to fuel three of SunLine's zero-emission buses per day.
Labor Leaders, CEOs Call on Governor Newsom to Invest in Hydrogen to Meet Climate Goals
In a letter to the Governor today, the State Building & Construction Trades Council, California State Council of Laborers, District Council of Ironworkers and the California-Nevada Conference of Operating Engineers, along with the chief executives of Toyota, Hyundai, Chevron, Shell, Linde and True Zero, called for the immediate funding in the 2022-2023 state budget. This funding will support the buildout of 1,000 hydrogen fueling stations statewide, which will provide fueling access for 97% of disadvantaged communities and 94% of the geographic state.
“This is the dawn of an entirely new, clean and domestic power source made to serve the energy and transportation markets to achieve our shared goals,” notes the letter. “Funding to ‘finish the launch’ of the statewide fueling network is a low-risk, high-reward investment. At this still early stage in market development, the signal California sends on hydrogen will impact private investment decisions.”
Mastering the Nordschleife with hydrogen
In a study, Porsche Engineering has examined the potential of hydrogen combustion engines. The result is a high-performance powertrain with emissions at the same level as ambient air.
New TravelCenters of America Survey Finds that Trucking Fleets Plan to Invest in EV and Hydrogen Vehicles to Meet Decarbonization Goals;
“This white paper, the first in a series about the trucking industry’s transition to sustainable fuels and TA’s role in that process, identifies the key challenges the industry is facing and the support it will need from federal and state governments to be successful,” said Jon Pertchik, Chief Executive Officer of TravelCenters of America. “One of the key findings is that many companies are hesitant to fully commit to alternative energy vehicles until the technology and infrastructure have matured enough for them to maintain efficient operations during the transition period and beyond. With the current range of EV and hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks, fleet leaders want to see a substantial number of available fast-charging and/or refueling stations before making larger investments in new vehicles. TA plans to be a leader in providing EV charging stations and hydrogen refueling for trucks at its over 275 travel centers as the industry adopts these sustainable fuels.”

“Infrastructure is where the heavy lift is,” said [State Senator Josh] Newman.
“Sufficient infrastructure creates a self-sustaining market,” he said. “It’s a chicken and egg thing. Government needs to help advance the platform. We need to allocate funding for the buildout.”

The IRA also includes other incentives to support the scale-up of hydrogen, including:
Extension of the Section 48 Investment Tax Credit for fuel cells and adding hydrogen storage to the credit.
Reinstatement of the Alternative Fuel Refueling Property Credit for ten years and raising the cap for hydrogen fueling stations to $100,000.
Creation of a new Clean Vehicle Credit that provides $7,500 in credits for new purchases and up to $4,000 for used clean vehicles (hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles qualify).
Creation of a new Commercial Clean Vehicle Credit that provides up to $40,000 for fleet operators to apply to fuel cell electric trucks and buses.

Hydrogen Reality Check #1: Hydrogen Is Not a Significant Warming Risk
The Myth
Recent reports have suggested that large-scale production of hydrogen could do more harm than good in the effort to reduce global warming.
The Reality
The climate benefit from a well-regulated clean hydrogen economy outweighs the impact of any emissions that hydrogen would add to our energy system, especially if we prioritize hydrogen produced from renewables-powered electricity.
BMW fuel cell SUV to enter mass production as soon as 2025: executive
"We see that hydrogen fuel cell technology is particularly relevant for larger SUVs," Nota said.
"We do believe in the importance of various technologies -- battery electric vehicles, also hydrogen and efficient combustion engines -- because we don't want to put all our investment in one area," he said.

FORVIA presents its expert solutions for commercial vehicles
On the FORVIA demo truck, Faurecia is proud to demonstrate its full system capabilities in hydrogen mobility for heavy-duty applications, with a full fuel cell powertrain that includes a complete hydrogen storage system, with 80 kg of gaseous hydrogen stored, and Symbio’ s 150kW fuel cell stack.
Alongside this main attraction, Faurecia is showcasing its Cryogenic Hydrogen Storage solution for the first time, highlighting the innovative capabilities of the company. Leveraging the higher energy density of liquid hydrogen, Faurecia has developed a compact storage solution that can store the same quantity of hydrogen with a volume reduced by 40%, thus enabling an easier vehicle integration and maximizing the quantity of hydrogen on-boarded. This system is particularly well suited to intensive usage and will enable a greater range of autonomy, reaching the 1,000 km milestone. This sub-cooled liquid hydrogen storage system is co-developed with Air Liquide.
Additionally, FORVIA will present its containerized storage solution, adapted for various industrials applications, including hydrogen transportation and distribution (refueling stations). By providing these lightweight and competitive solutions to the hydrogen ecosystems, such as the Zero Emission Valley in France, Faurecia reinforces its position as a key player in the hydrogen value chain and enabler of clean mobility.

Understanding Hydrogen Leakage Today and Tomorrow
As hydrogen continues scaling up, all stakeholders must examine the potential benefits and concerns to ensure we deliver on the climate promise hydrogen offers. Achieving net zero will be a long process that will present numerous challenges. What will be important is taking a solutions-focused approach that accurately captures those challenges and brings together academics, industry, government, and stakeholder groups to effectively address them by leveraging the best technology and regulatory framework.
